What's the real business problem or need?

Whether determining a strategic imperative, a user requirement or the root cause of a failure, well crafted questions combined with careful listening and analysis are the foundation of accurate and useful results. Knowing who and what to ask, and sifting the facts from the answers is key.  

Too often the tendency is to act or fix before the analysis is complete. Typically this results in poorly aligned or failed strategies and solutions, and more cost for rework. It can take patience and fortitude to sufficiently finish analysis before implementation, but it usually saves money and yields a better result.

Some common analysis roadblocks that can be presented by organizational baggage range from tradition: "we've always done it that way", to exceptionalism: "we're special and different than our peers." Circumventing these barriers requires education, introspection and a willingness to change.
